I have been moderating a private league for a couple of seasons and I know that there is a boss coin fee to continue in the next season.
However, I have noticed that sometimes, instead of asking for boss coins, the game asks for money from the club funds (10M or so). When does that happen and what can I do to trigger that? -

Unless this is a bug, it's not possible.
You only use boss coins to continue a league to next season only that it's cheaper than when you're creating the league for the first time.
