Choosing a team when creating a new account

Some friends of mine want to join me in a league I created. However, they aren't able to because they HAVE to choose another club first and can not join a specific league. Is true? Haven't played OSM in a while, that's why I am not really up to date.

No that's not true, they should be able to join your league if they have a free slot.
Probably they see there last season at this place http://prntscr.com/emzx4i
But if you click on it you will be able to get back and choose a new team/league
